Most real estate agents have flexible hours and work on commission, which can make it a fantastic side gig or full-time career.

Becoming a real estate agent can be a surprisingly quick process. If you are at least 18 years old and a citizen or legal resident of the United States, only a few steps stand between you and the career of your dreams!

To become a real estate agent you must complete 75 hours of required classroom education. This course can be completed in person or online. It can be spread out over several months or, if you have the time, you can complete it in about ten days of in-person classwork. If you are interested in taking this class online, check out the best real estate schools in New York.

This course will cover all of the basics of home valuation, land use, financing, legal issues, and more. You’ll also learn about investment properties, taxation, and property management. Armed with the knowledge you gain in these classes, your next task will be to…

Pass the school’s final exam

The school that taught you your classes will also administer a test at the end of your coursework. This test is a precursor to the state licensing examination. It will contain many similar questions, which have all been covered in your coursework. After you complete the exam, some schools will even give you a list of the questions you answered incorrectly, so that you may use them to study for the state licensing exam. Once you are confident in your knowledge of the material, you are ready for the next step in licensing.

Pass the state exam

In addition to the exam at the real estate school, you’ll be required to pass the Real Estate Salesperson exam. You will be given 90 minutes to complete 75 multiple choice questions . A score of 70% or higher is required in order to pass the exam. If you do not pass the first time, you may try again.

Find a sponsoring broker

In order to finalize your license, you must be connected with a sponsoring broker. A sponsoring broker will hold your license and help guide you through your first years as a real estate agent. Some brokers will even help you find clients and help you with advertising. In return, they will take part of your commission as payment. Use our interview tips to help you match with the broker that fits best with your career goals. Once you’ve found a broker, complete the New York application for your license, and as long as you’ve met all these requirements you’ll be well on your way to working as a real estate agent!

If you are motivated, you can obtain your real estate agent’s license within just a few months. This career is well within your grasp and very attainable if you’re willing to put in the work!
