In many places around the country, winter brings drier air that can leave your skin irritated, itchy and red. Having your furnace running throughout these months can also wreak havoc on your skin, so you need to take some extra steps to keep your skin soft and supple. Winter is an excellent time of year to be able to cozy up next to a fire and take extra hot showers to warm up. While both of these are lovely and relaxing ways to spend your time, they also dry out your skin. When your skin gets dry, it loses its resiliency. Not only does this lead to discomfort, but it could contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. 1. Set the Thermostat to the Right Temperature

As the temperature outside gets colder, you may be tempted to turn up the heat inside your house. However, the hotter you make it inside, the drier the air in your home becomes. Setting your thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. If you find that you are still chilly, consider curling up under a blanket.

Placing a humidifier in your home is a great way to add moisture to the dry winter air. It will also keep your skin hydrated. It’s advised that you place this appliance in rooms where you spend the most time, which may include your bedroom and living room. This is a simple but effective way to keep your skin healthy during the winter.

3. Be Wary of Your Washing Techniques

It may seem like taking a hot, steamy shower is an excellent way to add moisture to your skin, but it actually dries it out. If you’re looking for a way to keep your skin healthy this winter, then you need to reduce the amount of time you spend in the shower, as well as the temperature of the water. Using lukewarm warm and then patting dry with a towel is the best way to retain the moisture in your skin.

Since winter is also the time when colds and the flu run rampant, you may find that you are washing your hands more often—as you should. However, the same rule applies here: don’t use water that is too hot, as this will dry out your skin. Lukewarm water and soap work just as well to remove harmful elements from your hands and will allow them to retain some moisture.

4. Use the Right Moisturizers

Since winter air is so much drier than the rest of the year, to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, you need to use the right moisturizers. When it comes to your body, make sure you are using cream-based moisturizers and apply bright eyes cream to reduce dryness on your face. You’ll also want to consider using lip balms and applying lotion to your hands after washing to keep them from getting dry and cracking.

When winter weather moves in, it brings more than snow and ice. It also brings drier conditions that harm your skin. Therefore, you’ll have to take some critical steps to ensure that your skin remains hydrated and healthy.
